Jesus' Crucifixion: A Medical Analysis

Because of the explicit medical approach, the information and graphics contained in this article may  not be suitable for everyone.

During Holy Week, Christians meditate on Jesus' crucifixion and the theological significance of it. Jesus takes the sin of the whole world, that is the sins of everyone on the earth, and paid for them on the cross. The atoning sacrifice made by Jesus could not have been possible if He were not God. However, Jesus the incarnate God is also human. As such, in His violent death on the cross He suffered a unspeakable pain because of His crucifixion.

In 1986, the Journal of the American Medical Association published an article called "On the Physical Death of Jesus Christ." The article discusses, from a medical perspective, the evidence that Jesus was dead when taken down from the cross.
